One of Egypt' s most impressive monuments is to open its doors to the public for the first time.
Egypt's chief archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, has announced plans to permit access to the interior of the bent' pyramid at Dahshur, about 45km south of Cairo.
The 105m-high pyramid along with its neighbouring red pyramid' , Egypt' s first true pyramid was constructed for Pharaoh Sneferu (2613-2589BC), father of Khufu, who built the Great Pyramid at Giza.
The base of the pyramid was started at a steep angle; however, after building the first 50m architects realised stresses on the structure were too great, so the upper half was completed at a shallower angle hence its nickname.
Although the interior has been partially explored by archaeologists, up till now it has remained closed to the public.
The move is intended to spread the benefits of tourism to locations away from the biggest pyramids at Giza, which suffer from crowding by hawkers and fast-food restaurants.
In contrast, Dahshur is visited by only 5% of tourists to Egypt, according to Hawass, and remains a largely peaceful site to visit.
The pyramids at Dahshur are impressive in themselves the bent' pyramid retains much of its white limestone casing, unlike those at Giza but also attractive because they are surrounded by fields and desert instead of urban development.
