A 700-year-old American Indian settlement has been unearthed near the Dickson Mounds in Illinois, an expert says.
Dickson Mounds Museum Associate Curator Michael Conner said Michigan State University students have been helping excavate the pre-Columbian site near Lewiston, Ill., the Peoria (Ill.) Journal Star reported Friday.
"Almost anywhere we dig, we find something," Conner said.
"There may be upward of 50 to 100 houses out here somewhere," he added.
Michigan State anthropology Associate Professor Jodie O'Gorman agreed the dig, which began years ago, could continue to reveal more remnants of the American Indian settlement.
"We can't even say how big the site is at this point," he told the Journal Star.
The settlement discovered on the Emiquon Preserve has been dated back to nearly 1300 and workers have located arrowheads, pottery and possible trash pits filled with various animal bones.
