A relatively well preserved fossil of a horned dinosaur that could represent an ancient and as yet unknown species was found recently in one of Korea's southeastern provinces, local scholars said Monday, Yonhap News reported.
The fossil of a dinosaur's lower jaw is believed to be from the Cretaceous period, dating back some 80 million years, the National Cultural Properties Research Institute said in a press release.
The fossil, found in Goseong, South Gyeongsang Province, by scholars of Pukyong National University is the first vestige of a horned dinosaur in Korea.
Korean scholars believe the fossil could be of a dinosaur species that preceded the grass-eating Triceratops and Protoceratops.
"The fossil is very well-preserved, showing clear traces of eight teeth in the dinosaur's left underjaw," said Im Jong-duk, a researcher at the state-run Korean institute.
