They are digging into the past again this week at an archaeological site in northeastern South Carolina.

The state Natural Resources Department says the annual dig is being held this week and next at Great Pee Dee Heritage Preserve in Darlington County.

It's the 13th year for excavations at the site where researchers have found artifacts from American Indians dating back to 12,000 years ago.

The department is inviting the public to visit the site Saturday.

The Pee Dee Heritage Preserve includes seven miles of riverfront and is home to four threatened plant species
