Xinhua News Agency

Ten archaeologists from Guangdong province have arrived in Shantou in an effort to salvage an ancient ship sunk off Nan'ao Island, a key cultural project of China's undersea heritage protection authorities.

The undated photo shows the cultural relics unearthed from previous salvage operations of an ancient ship off Nan'ao Island in Shantou, Guangdong Province, in September 2009.

Bu Gong, deputy director of Guangdong Province's institute of cultural relics and archaeology, says that the salvage of "Nan'ao No.1" of Ming Dynasty (1368 1644), is expected to start a new chapter in China's undersea archaeological research.

The salvage operation was postponed for half a year due to poor weather and marine conditions after initially beginning rescue and excavation work in September 2009.

Other archaeologists who arrived on Nan'ao Island believe April and May would be the most suitable season for the salvage work of undersea heritage. After that period, the sea area could be affected by seasonal typhoons.

The vessel Nan Tian Shun, dispatched by Guangzhou Salvage Bureau, is quite experienced as it has joined the salvage operation of another sunken boat "Nanhai No.1" of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279).
