Archeological excavations in the southern Iranian province of Fars have yielded relics dating back to the Achaemenid and pre Achaemenid eras.

Tower of Silence, Yazd, Iran

Archeologists found a pre-Achaemenid ossuary, which is a combination of stone coffins and three towers of silence, CHTN reported on Sunday.

Two of the towers of silence were found near the stone coffins while the third one was found in the northeastern part of the area.

Ancient Persians used to lay their dead in towers of silence and expose them to the sun as they believed the structure could destroy pollutants and disintegrate flesh.

When the sun disintegrated the body and the birds stripped it off its flesh, the remaining bones were collected in stone ossuaries with holes to allow the deceased to see the sun.
